Corruption Perception INDEX 2016

The 25th January 2017 the NGO Transparency International published its annual Corruption Perception INDEX. The main outcome for 2016 is that over two-thirds of the 176 countries and territories in the index fall below the midpoint of the scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). The global average score is a paltry 43, indicating endemic corruption especially in a country's public sector.

CoR Anti-corruption conference

Recently the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the Congress of the Council of Europe hosted a conference on "The role of local and regional authorities in preventing corruption and promoting good governance".The joint event addressed the challenges faced in implementing anti-corruption strategies and promoting cooperation at the sub-national level.  It also explored recent changes in fighting the culture of corruption and focus on certain aspects of ethics that are particularly relevant for the public sector, such as conflicts of interest and codes of conduct.

The conference included testimonies from EU countries and those in its neighbourhood, as well as provided an opportunity for both the CoR and the Congress to present the economic gains associated with action in the field of anti-corruption and the role of the media and civil society in tackling corruption.
