GRECO evaluation report on Italy

An anti-corruption evaluation report, published on January 2017, urges Italy to tackle concerns over the conflict of interest affecting members of parliament, judges and prosecutors.

The Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) Fourth Round Evaluation Report on Italy, praises the work of the country’s Anticorruption Authority (ANAC) but wants “a thorough overhaul” of the current system and more efficient control and accountability mechanisms.

In its proposed 12 recommendations, GRECO encourages the strengthening of integrity tools in fiscal courts and warns of the “chilling effects” that any alleged politicisation of the profession would have on the perceived independence of the judiciary as a whole. GRECO also urges the end to the simultaneous holding of the office of magistrate and that of a member of local government.
